Was notified on Saturday 3 December that the Chairman of Rakautaua No 9 Trust Waru Allen passed away.

I only got to know Uncle Waru in recent years and knew of him more by reputation.

One story I do have, is me asking him at the last Trust meeting he attended, to enlighten us "younger ones" about what he remembers of the beach. He smiled and giggled to himself as he reminisced about the beach and funnily, Whangaehu pub patrons. It took me a while to realise that some of his conversation was about my koros brothers. Gems I never knew about. I thought I was making it up in my head. That changed when my brother came over to me excitedly after coming to the same conclusion. It was priceless.

A knowledgeable well-respected kaumatua who seemed to be involved in all things that helped Maori progress forward. I even remember watching the news one time on TV with cameras focussed on the regal gentleman speaking on the marae...Uncle Waru.

A person I know we will fondly remember and miss deeply.

Update

Kia ora

Haven't said too much lately. Just waiting...

Meeting at last at the Aotea Maori Land Court on Tuesday 10.30am to replace and remove trustees. They will also review the Trust.

Will be interesting and is another small step in the right direction.

Need to make the most of my time down there and want to try and tick a few other things off my list while there if possible.

A new beginning...???

Its Monday night and I am back home after having gone down to Wanganui last Wednesday to attend the Rakautaua No 9 Trust meeting held at the Maori Land Court last Friday afternoon.

It was good to see a few rellies I haven't seen for a while and a few new ones as well.

My initial thoughts are that we are on the road to progressing things at long last.

A number of new trustees have been voted in.

* Davey Paki
* Casey Paki
* Albert Thompson
* Karen Boyce
* Peter Manawaroa

...along with three of the Kaumatua who were already on the Trust

* Waru Alan
* Lilian Manawaroa
* Mary Wakefield

It was evident by a lot of the korero spoken that the bach agreements signed by the bach dwellers needs to be resolved as quickly as possible.

Cleaning the beach and conservation were also discussed.

The Marine and Coastal Area Act was briefly discussed. I can see the reason why it is something we need to pursue but more investigation is required.

In general I think the meeting was really about getting some new faces onto the Trust. Between us all, hopefully, it will provide new motivation and passion to help us achieve some of the goals we all want to see done.

you think everything is sorted and then ...

AGM in Wanganui end of April 2011 and I am looking forward to it.

I was going to attend to help in whatever capacity to get the Trust moving forward. Have now found out things are happening in the background that are bigger than the beach and may turn the situation into a political stoush.

The Marine and Coastal Area Act allows me to go to Court and contest customary title if you meet criteria and I'm sure we probably do.

Problem is why? What is the end goal is in mind? How is that going to help the beneficiaries of the beach?

I am sure more details will follow...

Site of former bach

This used to be a bach. I love the sign.

Greenhouse

This greenhouse is situated over a hill behind the baches. Must be a new initiative as I didn't know it existed until I stumbled upon it.

This is the other bach where someone lives permanently.

You can see the 7th bach on the right. All the other baches are down this road on the left.

7th - Bach

This is the first bach you see out at the beach and is part of the second group of baches. This property is fenced off and made up of a cabin, a bus and a number of caravans and sheds. It is my understanding that someone lives here permanently.

Pics of the baches

This is a birds eye views of the baches out at the beach. You will notice they are numbered and I have pics of each bach.

From the main road you would enter this picture from the top with the beach off the bottom.

Things are progressing

Today is Wednesday 16 February (not sure what time this website uses)and things appear to be moving forward at last in terms of achieving some positive outcomes with the Trust.

In the last month I have:

1)Had a korero with Rob Craig who leases the beach section to graze his cattle.
2)Had a korero with two cuzzies who are "part of the furniture at Whangaehu Marae" (Alan and Peter) and both have Whanau with vested interests in the Beach.
3)Took my Whanau out to the section after going to "Service" out at the Pa on the 25th. It allowed them to see what I had been talking about for years but appeared to be something of a pipe dream to them. Whats more, I took a camera along to take photos of all the baches and the beach (will upload some photos when I can organise it). What an eye-opening and beautiful day in the end.
4) Met Aunty Lil and had a korero with her about the Beach. She gave me a key to what was supposed to be an empty bach for Whanau. When I got out there it was occupied by someone unknown and the key didn't work. Aunt Lil had no idea as to who it was. I'm sure I will hear more about it.
4) Got some information concerning the Beach from a surveyor.
5) Done some research on legislation or rights afforded to land squatters.

I would like to think that I will go into more detail at some point but time will tell. Suffice to say that I met some more Whanau and new people, all with different, exciting and interesting perspectives on what they would like to see.

At the end of the day...go back to my Mission Statement. If it fits in with it, I am all good.

What has happened in the last two weeks:

A meeting of some of the Trustees along with some Whanau went to the Maori Land Court on Monday 8 February.

The result is that there is to be an AGM on the 30th of April held at Whangaehu Marae.

There is also to be a Special Trust meeting sometime in March of which I will have some input but more in terms of ensuring every aspect is considered and sorted.

Let 2011 be the year to remember for all the right reasons.

Yeehaa!!!!
